about

BOX OPENER is a collection of short films created by Girl Sweat to celebrate 10 years of Box Records. Originally to be screened uniquely at the Manchester leg of Box Records’ 10th anniversary shows.

June 2019 presented a unique predicament for Girl Sweat. He (the ever present Sweat) was booked in to play the Manchester leg of the Box Records 10th Anniversary Bash, but had suddenly relocated from the post-industrial north of England, to rural France. This was not going to work. Instead of performing live, Sweat decided to create a selection of new music with accompanying visuals to be screened, giving the promoter (Manchester’s formidable The Beauty Witch) the strict instructions not to let anyone know he wasn’t playing. Comprising of 7 new pieces of music, the film was made to lull the audience into a false sense of security until it is abruptly hijacked and twisted into altogether new mystery.

Taking the helm of all writing, recording, filming and editing duties, the entirety of Box Opener was created by Sweat, with help from long time collaborator C. Hoezelle (The Girl Sweat Pleasure Temple Ritual Band). Diverging into new sonic territory, for Box Opener Girl Sweat utilises undulating synths, rapid echoes and sinister vocals to accompany his kinetic, modulating, Lynchian visuals.
